Medina County Horseman’s Council Donates for National Park Trails

11/10/2009

Peninsula, OH- Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association (CVNPA) is pleased to announce that the Medina County Ohio Horseman’s Council (Medina OHC) has made a $17,500 contribution in support of CVNPA’s TRAILS FOREVER program.100% of this donation will be used for the purpose of capital improvement projects on equestrian trails within Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). Through this contribution Medina OHC has recognized CVNPA’s vision to ensure that CVNP achieves its full benefit to the citizens of Northeast Ohio and the nation.

This donation was made possible because of a very special fundraising effort that started in 2004 with the Medina OHC.  In July 2003, a major flood swept through CVNP that severely damaged all hiking and equestrian trails. Because there was a lack in funding to repair everything that was damaged, the equestrian trails were closed. Two women, who were serving on the board of Medina OHC, believed that a significant amount of money could be raised by producing a calendar that featured horses and women riders in “naturalistic” settings. The calendar was finished in July 2004. Requests for the calendar came from 48 states, as well as overseas, and Medina OHC still receives calendar donations today.

TRAILS FOREVER is a multifaceted initiative that builds on existing strengths of the National Park Service, Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association, and our volunteers. Its purpose is to ensure that CVNP has a top-quality trail system in perpetuity, insulated from fluctuations in federal funding by a strong base of local support. The five building blocks of TRAILS FOREVER are experiences, volunteerism, planning, trail enhancement, and philanthropy.

CVNPA is a nonprofit, membership-based organization working in partnership with the National Park Service to provide innovative education and foster community support of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  For more information on CVNPA please visit www.cvnpa.org.
