New 2011 Towpath Tag is Now Available!

10/18/2010

Peninsula, Ohio –Don’t miss one of the most beautiful times of year in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Take advantage of all that the season has to offer along the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail and proudly display the new 2011 Towpath Tag. With a donation of $5, you will receive one of the new Towpath Tags. Sponsored by Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association (CVNPA), 100% of every dollar raised directly supports the on-going maintenance, safety and operation of the Towpath Trail. It cost Cuyahoga Valley National Park an average around $10,000 per mile or $200,000 per year to maintain the 20 miles of Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The 2011 Towpath Tag features the Towpath safety campaign, Safe is Sound! On the Towpath Trail. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Cleveland Metroparks, Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, Stark Parks and the Tuscarawas Park Department launched a Towpath Trail safety program during the summer of 2010 in order to reduce accidents and improve trail courtesy. The theme, Safe is Sound, highlights the need for cyclist to give an audible signal when passing. The 2011 Towpath Tag features the message “Be Bright, Stay To The Right.”

Tags are available at several locations including all Cuyahoga Valley National Park visitor centers, local retailers, CVNPA’s website, and CVNPA’s retail store, Park Place in Peninsula located at 1593 Main Street in Peninsula.  For a complete list of locations, please visit our website at www.cvnpa.org.

The Towpath Trail that winds through the Cuyahoga Valley was constructed in the 1800’s as part of the Ohio & Erie Canal and served as the path mules and horses walked to pull canal boats carrying goods south to the Ohio River and north to Lake Erie.  Since 1997, the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Tag Program has provided Towpath Trail users the opportunity to help support the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

CVNPA is a non-profit organization created to engage public support for the park and provide services to enhance public use and enjoyment of the park. For more information about CVNPA and its membership program, visit www.cvnpa.org or call (330) 657-2909.

CVNP encompasses 33,000 acres along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Managed by the National Park Service, CVNP combines cultural, historical, recreational, and natural activities in one setting.
