Stanford House and Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center

Immerse yourself in the writings of celebrated poet Mary Oliver and in the natural beauty of your national park. David Hassler, director of the Wick Poetry Center, will guide you as you explore your own relationship with nature through your writing, and park educators will walk with you along the river in search of inspiration. Stay overnight at the historic Stanford House and wake up in your national park.

Friday 8/25 – at Stanford House

  • Check-in - 3:30 – 5 pm
  • Introduction and icebreaker/opening activity: 5 - 6 pm
  • Dinner: 6 - 7 pm
  • Evening activities, hiking, guided discussion and writing based on poems and prose by Mary Oliver: 7 – 10 pm
  • Conclusion: wine, snacks, conversation, observations: 10 – 11 pm

Saturday 8/26 – at Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center

  • Travel from Stanford House (with overnight bags) to Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center: 8:15 – 8:30 am
  • Breakfast at Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center: 8:30 – 9:30 am
  • Hiking, outdoor activities, reading/writing sessions, further study of Mary Oliver’s creative writing: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
  • Lunch in Lipscomb Dining Hall: 12:30 – 1: 30 pm
  • Hiking, outdoor activities, reading/writing session: 1:30 – 2:30 pm
  • Final share and conclusion to full program, Legacy Room: 2:30 – 3:30 pm
