About Amelia Maslen’s exhibition: If I told you that a flower bloomed in a dark room, would you trust it?
The work in this series is a visual exploration of an urban relationship with plants. The work explores both how humans care for plants in an indoor, controlled environment, as well as how in those environments, plants become elements of design within the home or business.
In these settings, plants are often given temperature controlled grow lights on timers, theoretically providing them with optimal growing conditions. These lights, however, are a bit like vitamins providing 200% daily values of elements. In these controlled environments, plants are given optimal soil and grow pots, a product of studying what is best for their individual specific needs. Plants are also used as elements of design in interior decoration. Large perfectly green trees brighten dark corners, cut flowers grace spotless coffee tables in matching vases. Plants are chosen for their aesthetic assimilation into a home’s decor, rather than its ability to survive in such a manufactured environment. Ultimately, the drive to keep plants in home and business spaces reconnects people to nature, however tailored that may be.
This exhibition opens on Sunday, October 22, 2017 and closes on Friday, December 15, 2017.
