Invasive species are aggressive non-natives that overtake the native plants and create monocultures, severely damaging the biological diversity of a natural area. Many of the problematic invasive plants were originally introduced for use in agriculture or as ornamental garden plants, prized for their hearty growth habit and beauty. Their eventual escape from the garden bounds unleashed a complex environmental challenge that is an ongoing struggle to manage.
Susan’s artwork features some of the most common invasives found in the park and surrounding area. Often hidden in plain sight, these “Beautiful Intruders” point to a need for our responsible stewardship as nature’s caretakers.
