A hub for winter activities and equipment rental in CVNP.
Northeast Ohioans often say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change.” But that mantra doesn’t apply to winter. In 2014, both Cleveland and Akron made the top 20 snowiest cities in America list. No thanks to El Nino, global warming, and polar vortexes, the cold and snow is bound to continue. Unless you want to spend half the year in hibernation, find a way to celebrate winter and get outside. This is where CVNP can help.
Once the ground whitens, CVNP’s Kendall Lake Shelter turns into the Winter Sports Center. Here, you can rent cross-country skis and snowshoes as well as take a lesson.* With nine trails offering more than 50 miles of snow-filled fun, you are sure to find something for everyone in the family to enjoy this winter.
What Makes It Great
The trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing offer a range of difficulty levels so there is something for the beginner as well as the more seasoned winter outdoorsman. Regardless of your ability, the scenic landscape on all the trails is incredible and you can enjoy your time on skis along gently rolling hills and open fields or strenuous steep climbs and more technical mixed woodlands.
Even if you’re hesitant to get back on skis or completely new to the sport, one of our former instructors always says, “If you can walk, you can ski.” The park offers a few beginner-level classes each year on basic movement and how to choose the right ski size, along with more advanced classes on preparing your skis and navigating hills. Once you’re comfortable, you can take your newfound skills out onto CVNP’s approved ski and snowshoe trails, such as the Towpath, Cross Country Trail, or Lake Trail. The park also offers guided snowshoe hikes every so often. Click here for a schedule.
So, this winter, if you can’t escape to the Poconos, turn CVNP into a staycation. Book the Stanford House and get out onto the trails. If you prefer downhill, Boston Mills Ski Resort is nearby.
Who Will Love It
Of course, outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy CVNP’s Winter Sports Center. So will parents who want to pass on their love of skiing but can’t spend hundreds of dollars on equipment and lessons. Those who want to get outside during the winter and try something new will find the Winter Sports Center the perfect spot to get some exercise and explore nature.
